Research Study: Analyzing the Cybersecurity Skills Gap of Entry Level Employees in the Maritime Industry

Welcome Participants!

Thank you for participating in our research study exploring the potential of AI-based semantic analysis for improving maritime cybersecurity education. Your expertise and feedback are invaluable in helping us understand how these tools can better align Open Educational Resources (OERs) with workforce needs.

About This Research

This qualitative case study evaluates the use of artificial intelligence (AI) based semantic analysis and natural language processing (NLP) to analyze and identify gaps in Open Education Resources (OERs) in relation to workforce requirements for the maritime cybersecurity industry. Through the CHRIS (Cybersecurity Human Resource Intelligence System) tool, we analyze OER content—including course descriptions, learning modules, and instructional materials—and compare them against maritime cybersecurity workforce requirements defined by industry and the NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework.

Additionally, we're exploring educator and industry stakeholder perceptions of AI adoption for OER evaluation using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). We're particularly interested in your perspectives on performance expectancy (how useful the tool is), effort expectancy (how easy it is to use), and facilitation conditions (what support would be needed) to understand the factors that might influence adoption of AI-based analysis tools for evaluating maritime cybersecurity educational content.

How to Interact with the CHRIS Tool

During this session, you'll explore the CHRIS system, which uses AI to analyze job descriptions and map them to the NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework. Here's how to proceed:

  1. Browse the Job Analysis Reports: Click on any of the job role mapping reports available on the page. Each report represents a job description that has been analyzed by the AI system.
  2. Review the Mapping Results: For each job description you explore, the system will show:
    • The most relevant NICE workforce role identified for that job description
    • The top five most relevant knowledge elements from that workforce role
    • The top five most relevant skills from that workforce role
    • The top five most relevant tasks from that workforce role
    • The top five relevant lessons from the Clark Center that align with these knowledge, skills, and tasks
  3. Test Different Job Descriptions: Try exploring various job descriptions to see how the AI maps different maritime cybersecurity positions to the NICE Framework and identifies relevant training resources.

Feedback Considerations

As you interact with the system, please consider the following aspects for your feedback:

Providing Your Feedback

After exploring the tool, you'll participate in a 60-minute interview via Zoom about your experience. The interview will be recorded, and the researcher will take notes during your session. All your responses and the recording will be held in confidence. Your insights will help us refine this approach to better serve maritime cybersecurity education and workforce development needs.

Your participation contributes to improving how we prepare the maritime cybersecurity workforce through better-aligned educational resources. Thank you for your valuable time and expertise!
